Many of you are aware that I am actively involved in international parental child abduction prevention. My interest and
activism is based upon my own experience. I was unexpectedly forced to enter
into the most horrific personal storms I could have ever imagined as my child
was used as a pawn by his other parent. Tragically, international parental
child abduction is a known act of criminal kidnapping under federal law. It is
also cited by various government institutions and leading experts from around
the world as a cruel form of child abuse. In the vast majority of cases, the
abducting parent creates a well thought-out fraudulent scheme that will allow
that person to kidnap the child or children abroad. During the time that I
chased the cyclone of having a child internationally abducted, I made a promise
that one day I would try to help other parents and children who are targeted or
taken. Since this time, I have participated in creating or implementing new
state or federal law that will protect children from abduction, I have
published two important books on the subject, created an extensive documentary
on the subject, researched and published numerous reports and essays, assisted
other targeted parents and their children, and am the Founding Director of the
International Child Abduction Research and Enlightenment (I CARE) Foundation.

As some of you may have read, there still remains several slanderous attacks
against my name, reputation, and character. Most of what was written occurred
several months before or during the long period my child was abducted.
Defaming a Chasing Parent's reputation in advance, and during the act, of
kidnapping is one of the most often used legal defenses an abducting parent
will use to defend against their own criminal act of kidnapping (under Article
13 of The Hague Convention). I was not immune to having untruthful, defamatory
statements made against me. Most of what was written was all part of a very
clever and well orchestrated campaign intending to portray me as a terrible
man. The ease with which online impersonation and defamation can be done is
astonishing. As a result, I have become a huge advocate of preventing online
impersonation, working very hard to have new laws in California and New
York to make online digital impersonation a crime. Fortunately, the facts are
straight-forward: the international courts I was required to navigate to
legally bring my son home realized the severity and nature of the
blatant lies directed toward me and, as evidence was presented and ruled upon
by multiple courts, that the abductor and others who conspired with her were
behind the malicious acts to create a legal defense for her criminal act of
kidnapping. The courts ruled in my favor.

Dear to my heart are our nation's public libraries. As a self-confessed librophiliac, I view libraries as the greatest cultural Mecca's of
society. As I mentioned, as a teen I had no inclination nor time for reading, filling my time in fulfilling my dream of becoming a professional baseball player, which was within reach, until I broke my
pitching hand. I remember how frustrated and depressed
I became. One day while my friends were preparing to play a game, I found
myself at a library. And it was there that Miguel de Cervantes and his "THE
INGENIOUS GENTLEMAN DON QUIXOTE OF LA MANCHA changed my world forever. Its contained quote,"When life itself seems
lunatic, who knows where madness lies? To surrender dreams - -this may be
madness; to seek treasure where there is only trash. Too much sanity may be
madness! But maddest of all - -to see life as it is and not as it should be," spoke to me of my dormant truths.
Since that time, I have made consistent and significant contributions to many
of our nation's public libraries and participated recently in ensuring
my Los Angeles Public Library had enough public funding via the passage of
public referendum 'Measure L' - which would increase its funds to expand its operations to the community.
Did I mention that I have traveled extensively around the world and planned
many vacations around visiting a library? My favorite library of all - the one
that has its doors open ... the Secret Archives in Vatican City has
changed my life in ways I could never properly describe.
